29th February - Who owns it?

The BBC seems to be full of interesting little articles at the moment.
Frankly, they are of better quality than a lot of their headline journalism - which seems to be more interested in entertainment than in quality news reporting.
BBC take note - from your news reporting we want - shock horror and surprise - factual and accurate news reporting on events that happen, not public opinion on how they feel about the news.

In the meantime, click the BBC News logo to read their quirky article about the 29th February.

Little sis update

Little sis is OK, but the surgery did not work out as planned….
Turns out the location of the problem within her heart is such that the risks involved in completing the procedure as planned are greatly increased - unfortunately, they could not detemine this until they got in there.
She had agreed with the surgeon before they began that, if the problem was in this higher risk area, they would not proceed on this occasion.
She now has some decisions to make….

  1. Decide to go again and proceed in the knowledge that the risks are increased during the surgery, but that the problem will be solved if successful.
  2. Decide to not go again, but accept that the attacks will happen and that it will be hanging over her.

Not an enviable position, but I will fully support her whatever her decision.
I just want her to be OK.
She is my little sis after all.

Lincolcnshire Earthquake - Feb 2008

5.3 on the richter scale and I slept through it!
Although, admittedly it was much further north than here.

My little sister has heart surgery tomorrow

Me and my ickle sis and some old building behind us.

My little sis is going into hospital tomorrow morning for some heart surgery.
I say ‘little sis’, but she is 30 years of age (3 years younger than me) and could most likely beat the crap outta me, but then she did used to be a kick boxer.
They are going to attempt to zap a nerve that seems to be mis-firing, which causes her heart to beat irregularly and at a scarily fast rate, sometimes over 200 beats per minute.
Trouble is they have to provoke her heart into having one of these episodes by using some kind of stimulus, and she may have to be awake (if sedated) during the procedure.
I know the hospital will look after her and I know there is nothing I can do to help the situation….
…. but I can’t help worrying for my little sis.
Sometimes I feel so very far away….

My little sister

I will be thinking about you tomorrow, Ange.
Love ya sis.

A great appraisal and a promotion

A little while ago I wrote a post entitled ‘Work does, in fact, not suck!‘ - and I have to say that I am still in total agreement with my earlier post.
On Thursday I had my first appraisal in my new job…. and it went really well.
My boss said some very nice things and I was really pleased with how they see my performance so far.
However, that was trumped by what happened on Friday afternoon….
On Tuesday I was interviewed for a promotion.
I have only been with the company AND in my current job for 4 months, and while I had no doubt that I would be good at the new role, it was at the back of my mind that there would be more qualified internal applicants.
However, on Friday afternoon I was offered the job and was given some great feedback by my senior manager.
It is great to work for a company that recognises the work that you do and the effort you put in.
I hope to be there a very long time and hope that I can continue to do well.
Its weird, and yet not weird - I am enjoying my job!
I haven’t been able to say that for a long time.
